Low-Antioxidant Diets May Fuel Memory Loss

Eating a diet low in a specific group of antioxidants known as flavanols may contribute to age-related memory loss, a recent study has found. Flavanol consumption appears to be specifically connected to hippocampal-dependent memory, which includes memories of facts and events.

The researchers also found that supplementing a low-flavanol diet with a food-derived source of flavanols (cocoa extract) helped improve memory in certain participants.

The study took place over a 3-year period and involved over 3,500 older adults. One group of participants took 500 mg/day of a cocoa flavanol supplement and the other received a placebo. While the supplement did not improve memory across the board, it did show significant improvements in those who started with the lowest-quality diet.

Top food sources of flavanols include apples, berries, plums, cocoa, tea, grapes, and certain types of beans.

Afternoon Exercise Linked to Better Blood Sugar Control

Exercising in the afternoon may lead to better blood sugar improvements for people with type 2 diabetes than exercising at other times of the day, according to recent research. Those who engaged in moderate-to-vigorous afternoon exercise had the greatest reductions in blood sugar.

“We’ve known that physical activity is beneficial [for type 2 diabetes],” said co-corresponding author Jingyi Qian, PhD, “but what our study adds is a new understanding that timing of activity may be important too.”

The researchers examined data from over 2,400 participants and gave each one a waist accelerometry recording device to measure physical activity throughout the duration of the study. The afternoon exercise group not only had the best sustained reduction in blood sugar but also had the best chance of stopping their diabetes medication(s).

Physical activity, regardless of time of day, is often recommended as a method to help manage blood sugar. Current general guidelines for exercise recommend adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.
